On September 30th, 1954 this submarine was commissioned into
the United States Navy becoming the first nuclear submarine.
Construction of the submarine was made possible by the successful
development of a nuclear propulsion plant by a group of scientists
and engineers under the leadership of Captain Hyman G. Rickover. In
the next few years that followed the submarine would break all
submerged speed and distance records.  The submarine would
also, accomplished the “impossible” by reaching the geographic North
Pole  (90 degrees North) on August 3rd, 1958.
