History Challenge 10/27/08

On October 28th, 1886 President Grover Cleveland accepted this statue on behalf of American citizens saying ” We will not forget that Liberty has here made her home; nor shall her chosen altar be neglected”. The statue was a gift from the people of France to their American friends in recognition of the two countries’ commitment to liberty and democracy and their alliance during the American Revolutionary War. The statue quickly became a symbol of America’s humanitarianism and willingness to take in the world’s “tired, poor and huddled masses” (the inscription on the monument’s pedestal). Name this Statue.
