Barney Who!!

Who’s Harry Reid? Barney Who? Republicans currently control congress – right! I get my news from Bill Maher, uh… or CNN… something like that.

Promote then as an object of primary importance, Institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge. In proportion as the structure of a government gives force to public opinion, it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened.”-George Washington

“As long as the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader. If virtue and knowledge are diffused among the people, they will never be enslaved. This will be their great security.” -Samuel Adams

“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free…it expects what never was and never will be.” -Thomas Jefferson

How in the world can anybody cast a vote and not know who is controlling congress or who the leaders are? Is the media that bad or are the people that stupid? How much longer will we be a free people, if we know nothing about our leaders, or at the very least - who they are? NOT VERY LONG!

Should a person have to pass some kind of basic (very basic -like who's in control of congress) current event test before that person is allowed to vote?

History Challenge 11/17/08

This week’s prize is the book “The Christmas Sweater” by Glenn Beck.

Because of the opposition to the adoption of the Constitution by the anti-Federalists, several states proposed amending the document to better protect the states, as well as individuals, from the incursions of the centralized federal government. Thus “The Bill of Rights” were drafted, debated, and eventually adopted.

Match the rights to the correct amendment.

1) The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated….

2) The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.

3) Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

a) Amendment I

b) Amendment X

c) Amendment IV

To Hell and Back

If your looking for something to do on a cold raining day and like old war movies, then I strongly suggest you watch the movie “To Hell and Back” starring Audie Murphy. The Movie is about the true story of the most decorated war hero in American History – Audie Murphy. Yep, Audie Murphy playing himself, now how many people can say that!! The movie starts when he was a boy in Texas with his family struggling to make ends meat, and then goes into his experience in the Army starting in North Africa and then onto Germany. The movie is a great way to learn about one of America’s greatest heroes, and is worth your time. The movie was made in 1955, and it has a run time of 107 minutes. For Classic War Movies, i’d give it 4 stars!!

Rent it at Netflix  or BLOCKBUSTER!

History Challenge 11/03/08

This week’s prize is a $15 Gift Certificate to our store (Now over a 100,000 items)!

Why is Election Day the Tuesday after the first Monday in November?

a) Lawmakers wanted to prevent election day from falling on the first of November because, November 1st is All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation for Roman Catholics.

b) Since most residents of rural America had to travel a significant distance to the county seat in order to vote, Monday was not considered reasonable since many people would need to begin travel on Sunday. This would, of course, have conflicted with Church services and Sunday worship.

c) Most merchants were in the habit of doing their books from the preceding month on the 1st. Apparently, Congress was worried that the economic success or failure of the previous month might prove an undue influence on the vote!

d) All of the Above.Submit Answer Here!!!!
