This week’s prize is the book “The 5000 Year Leap: A Miracle That Changed the World“.

On January 3rd, 1959, President Eisenhower signed a special proclamation admitting this territory  into the Union as the 49th and largest state. The land was originally purchase from Russia on March 30th, 1867 for the bargain price on 7.2 million dollars. Name this territory that became the 49th state to enter into the Union.

This week’s prize is the book “The American Patriot’s Almanac: Daily Readings on America” by William J. Bennett.

On December 15th, 1791 this state became the last state to ratify the Bill of Rights, making the first ten amendments to the Constitution law and completing the revolutionary reforms begun by the Declaration of Independence. Name this last state to ratify the Bill of Rights.

This week’s prize is the book “We the People: The Story of Our Constitution” by Lynne Cheney.

On December 10th, 1778 this person was elected to be the President of the Continental Congress. He was very instrumental in causing the Constitution to be ratified, by writing the Federalist Papers, along with James Madison and Alexander Hamilton. He also helped to write the Constitution of New York, and from 1795 to 1801 he held the position of Governor of that State. Name this Continental Congress President and Governor of New York. Each year around the anniversary of the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor (that’s December 7^th for those who voted for Obama), I watch either the movie Pearl Harbor or Tora Tora Tora as a reminder of the great sacrificed made that day. This year was Tora Tora Tora and it’s a great way to understand the big picture of the events that lead up to the attack including the names of those who played a roll in trying to better prepare the defenses in Hawaii and the names of those who missed connecting the dots. The movie also shows the view point of the Japanese including the names of those who planned and executed the attack. If you want to understand the events of the Pearl Harbor attack and don’t have a week to research it in the library, then I would strongly (5 stars) recommend renting or buying this movie. It was made in 1970 and has a 145 minute run time.

Their preamble reads: “We, the people of the state of _______-grateful to Almighty God for the civil, political and religious liberty which He hath so long permitted us to enjoy, and looking to him for a blessing upon our endeavors to secure and transmit the same unimpaired to succeeding generations-in order to form a more perfect government, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this constitution for the state of _______.” (The 1848 version of their preamble).
