What Heroes Gave
by
Roger J. Robicheau (Sp 5, US Army)

http://www.usmemorialday.org/poetry/gave.html

Each donned their uniform to be
Defenders of our liberty

Their mission sure, their spirits bright
Guard freedom’s home, be brave to fight

One final day each faced their call
Each gave their best enduring all

We’ll never know what they went through
But know they loved this country true

Deep down inside we should all feel
What heroes gave, their cost so real

We must stay thankful, grateful of
The gift of freedom through their love

Their loved ones bore the gravest pain
What we can’t know, some now sustain

To God I pray their pain will cease
And each will find long-lasting peace

Remember this from year to year
What heroes gave – shan’t disappear

We’ll never let their special day
Their time for honor slip away

These brave fought for a nation free
If not for them, where would we be?

This week’s prize is the book “The Ultimate Man’s Survival Guide

On May 20th 1862 President Abraham Lincoln signed this ACT into law, which provided that any adult citizen, or intended citizen, who had never borne arms against the U.S. government could claim 160 acres of federal land, and that they had to “improve” the land by building a house and cultivating the fields.. By the end of the Civil War, some 15,000 land claims had been made and by 1900, 600,000 claims had been made for some 80 million acres of public land. It was taken up especially by people with previous experience on farms back East or in Europe. Landless men or laborers seldom could afford or acquire the necessary tools, seed, and livestock. Many of them became farm laborers and worked their way up the “agricultural ladder.” Name this ACT, which Abraham Lincoln signed into Law on May 20th, 1862.

This week’s prize is the book “Common Senseand the “Don’t Trend on Me” Flag.

In his famous 16 pamphlet series entitled, The American Crisis this author wrote the following which was read aloud to the Colonial Army at Valley Forge by order of General Washington.

The Cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind. Where, say some, is the king of America? I’ll tell you, friend, He reigns above.

What we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly; tis dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated.

Name this author of The American Crisis series.
