History Challenge 5/18/09
This week’s prize is the book “The Ultimate Man’s Survival Guide“
On May 20th 1862 President Abraham Lincoln signed this ACT into law, which provided that any adult citizen, or intended citizen, who had never borne arms against the U.S. government could claim 160 acres of federal land, and that they had to “improve” the land by building a house and cultivating the fields.. By the end of the Civil War, some 15,000 land claims had been made and by 1900, 600,000 claims had been made for some 80 million acres of public land. It was taken up especially by people with previous experience on farms back East or in Europe. Landless men or laborers seldom could afford or acquire the necessary tools, seed, and livestock. Many of them became farm laborers and worked their way up the “agricultural ladder.” Name this ACT, which Abraham Lincoln signed into Law on May 20th, 1862.
