History Challenge 6/22/09

This week’s prize is the book “Liberty and Tyranny” by Mark Levin

Born on June 25th, 1745 this future patriot physician would also become the U.S. Treasurer under four different presidents. During the War he served as a surgeon and is believed to have been at the siege of Yorktown. He believe (as an anti-Federalist) that the Constitution had given the central government too much weight when it established the balance between state and federal authority. Nonetheless, he held prominent positions in the new national government. From 1789 to 1793, he served as a congressmen from South Carolina and eight years later, he accepted Thomas Jefferson’s appointment as the treasurer of the United States. He remained in that position under four presidents: Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and John Quincy Adams, and died while holding the office in 1828. Name this patriot physician and US Treasurer.
