This week’s prize is the “1599 Geneva Bible – Patriot’s Edition

When the first Congress of the United States met on September 7th, 1774, it began with prayer which lasted for hours. Reverend Jacob Duche read from this Psalm, which afterwards they felt God used it to speak direction into their lives. “It was enough,” said Mr. Adams, “to melt a heart of stone. I saw tear gush into the eyes of the old pacific Quakers of Philadelphia.” John Adams in a letter to his wife also stated: “I never saw a greater effect upon an audience. It seemed as if Heaven had ordained that Psalm to be read on that morning.” Which book of Psalm did Reverend Jacob Duche read from that morning?

On August 24th, 1814 British troops set fire to Washington (D.C.) including the White House and capital buildings. The following morning Washington was still on fire and British troops continued to set fires and destroy ammunition depots; then something happened that saved Washington and perhaps the country. What happened on August 25th that saved Washington.

In a bold act of patriotism this First Lady saved important state papers and the full-length portrait of former president and national icon George Washington on August 23rd, 1814. As British troops where marching to Washington D.C. she took the time at great risk to herself and saved these important state items while leaving behind many personal belongings. The White House was set on fire the next day by British troops. Name this First Lady.

History Challenge 08/09/10 The Badge of Military Merit

This week’s prize is the book “Boy Scouts Handbook“ the first edition (1911 reprint).

On August 7th, 1782 General George Washington created the “Badge for Military Merit,” a decoration consisting of a purple, heart-shaped piece of silk, edged with a narrow binding of silver, with the word Merit stitched across the face in silver. The badge was to be presented to soldiers for “any singularly meritorious action” and permitted its wearer to pass guards and sentinels without challenge. The honoree’s name and regiment were also to be inscribed in a “Book of Merit” (has not been found). Only three soldiers where given this “Badge of Merit” during the American Revolutionary War; name any one of the three.

He once stated the following regarding America’s destiny: “If there be a destiny, it is of no avail to us unless we work with it. If we perceive a destiny in America, if we believe that Providence has been our guide, our own success, our own salvation requires that we should act and serve in harmony and obedience…”.
