On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress voted to fit out two sailing vessels, armed with ten carriage guns, as well as swivel guns, and manned by crews of eighty, and to send them out on a cruise of three months to intercept transports carrying munitions and stores to the British army in America. Over the course of the War of Independence, the Continental Navy sent to sea more than fifty armed vessels of various types. This pass Sunday (Oct 2nd) was Pulpit Freedom Sunday which is a movement to restore free speech rights of pastors and to challenge the constitutionality of the _________ Amendment which was passed by Congress in 1954 as an amendment to section 501(c)(3) of the federal tax code.. Before this amendment was passed, peachers in this country would speak boldly about the great moral and social issues of the day and about the candidates positions on those issues. The Amendment was named after the Senator who offered the amendment and it stated that entities who are exempt from federal income tax cannot:

Participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of – or in opposition to – any candidate for public office.

Many believe it was just an effort by the senator to restrict the speech of two private foundations that supported his political opponent at the time. He would later become the President of the United States and give us the so called “Great Society” programs. Name this Amendment to the federal tax code.

On September 22nd, 1862 President Abraham Lincoln issued the  famous Emancipation Proclamation which some thought was in direct disregard to the Supreme Court’s 1857 ________ v. Sanford decision. The Proclamation granted the right to life, freedom, and citizenship to all persons irregardless of race, origin, circumstance. After the proclamation was made Lincoln noted that “I never, in my life, felt more certain that I was doing right, than I do in signing this paper.”  Which Supreme court decision did Lincoln disregard by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation?

On September 7th, 1774 the first Congress of the United States began with a prayer by Reverend Jacob Duche (pronounce Dushay). He first read this book of Psalm’s, after which John Adams wrote in a letter to his wife: ” I never saw a greater effect upon an audience. It seemed as if Heaven had ordained that Psalm to be read on that morning.  After this, Mr Duche, unexpectedly to everybody, struck out into an extemporary prayer, which filled the bosom of every man present. I must confess, I never heard a better prayer, or one so well pronounced… with such fervor, such ardor, such earnestness and pathos, and in language so elegant and sublime… It has had an excellent effect upon everybody here. I must beg you to read that psalm.” Name this book of Psalm that Mr Duche read on that September morning.

On September 4th, 1780, this patriot bravely lead his small band of around 52 carolina militia against a force of 200 british loyalist at at Blue Savannah, South Carolina. This kind of bravely and love of liberty spread thoughout the region and he then gained even more support and troops. He won fame and the “Swamp Fox” nickname for his ability to strike and then quickly retreat into the South Carolina swamps without a trace. His military strategy is considered an 18th-century example of guerilla warfare and served as partial inspiration for Mel Gibson’s character, Benjamin Martin, in the film The Patriot (2000).
